Now that we’re nearing the end of the year, it is a good time to have a look back at some of the biggest stories in architecture in 2023. There have been plenty of headline grabbers over the period. Read on to learn more, then contact us if you want to work with some of the best architects in London next year.
January
One of the most troubling stories came right at the start of 2023. New research from the University of Cambridge said that the energy savings we can achieve with good insulation are only temporary. Sadly, in many cases they can vanish within four years. This comes due to a “rebound effect”. It means that people typically start using more energy in the years after insulating their property and reducing their consumption.
February
The headline in the second month of the year was another massive project for Saudi Arabia. The country is using super-size schemes to help put them on the map. Work on a 170km long, 200m wide city called The Line is underway, progressing throughout 2023. In February we saw plans for a 400m high, 400m long cube-shape skyscraper. Mukaab will become the tallest building in Riyadh.
April/May
AI has been a hot topic in architecture for a few years now. However, there was a big leap in April/May with the reveal of Tilly Talbot, the first AI designer. Developed by Studio Snoop, Tilly is part of the design team and can play a part in creating various products. The AI is programmed for human centred design and can suggest things like materials. The whole project showcases that working with AI instead of fearing it will replace designers is a better option.
June
The biggest story in June wasn’t one that had a huge impact on us as architects in London. However, it could show attitudes towards skyscrapers are changing. The change was that Paris chose to reimpose a height restriction on projects in the city. There was a previous law from 1977 to limit the heights. Now, projects can’t exceed 12 storeys or 37m. Other cities could also follow suit in the future.
August
Skyscrapers were in the news again a couple of months later, but this time in America and with a much more positive story. August saw the completion of Brooklyn Tower, a 93 storey super tall building in New York. People love the design because of the intricate facade.
September
Saudi Arabia and architecture was in the news again for the Neom tower. The plan was to create a 300m building above Trojena, a popular resort for skiing. Renderings were revealed and instantly got attention.
October
New York was in the news again for architecture in October. This time it was for the completion of The Spiral. At 314m, it is slight shorter than the Brooklyn Tower. However, the design is stunning with a series of terraces seeming to climb the exterior like steps.
