A closer look at Cobham Bowers

Homes come in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they are even buildings designed for communal living, including older age groups. The goal with every project should be to ensure the properties are perfect for the residents. As one of the top architects in London, we keep this philosophy at the heart of our work. You can see it for yourself on our stunning new Cobham Bowers project.

The development was for Pegasus, the retirement housing specialist. It wasn’t our first time working with them, so we had a unique understanding of what they were trying to achieve. We delivered this with two residential blocks with a central pavilion and garden to ensure a great community feel.

The design

Architects LondonA crucial thing with the project is it blends personal and communal living. This is especially important for later-living projects because people can easily feel isolated and that can have a huge impact on their health and wellbeing. That isn’t a problem here; there are private spaces as well as community ones to bring people together.

The design also works to inspire people to spend time outside. Again this can be a problem with later-living and can negatively affect health and wellbeing. But here, the layout of the buildings and communal spaces encourages people to go outside and socialise. The 53 one and two bedroom apartments also have balconies or terraces to give people some private outdoor space.

Another impressive feature of the design is how well it links with the local area. The apartments are dual aspect to maximise the amount of natural light. Floor to ceiling windows provide fantastic views. So, the apartments are light, airy, and won’t make people feel trapped.

The specific materials for the build were chosen with care too. There is light grey brick with white mortar to contrast with the darker bricks on other local buildings. However, there is unknapped flint lining a number of walls to celebrate local materials. Plus, the roof has red clay tiles so it blends with the rest of the village when viewing from a distance.
