Do historic buildings need more protection?

There have been a number of devastating fires in different historical buildings in the UK in the last few years. The most recent was just last month when a blaze destroyed the majority of the Hotspur Press in Manchester. There are now calls to do more to protect these crucial pieces of our history. We want to have a closer look here, then you can speak to us if you want some help from a top architect in London.

Manchester’s oldest mill

The Hotspur Press building dates back to 1801. It was a beloved part of the city’s skyline, one of the most iconic buildings in the area. Additionally, it was an important part of the industrial heritage. It was a printing press for 94 years before closing in 1996. Sadly, it had been vacant since then and had become derelict.

Interestingly, there had been plans to redevelop the building. Planning permission had been given for a project to convert it into a 37 storey tower of student accommodation. It would have retained the facade and historic signage, but built above it. While it got approval, there was an application to get the property a listing to protect it. That was unsuccessful, but was due for review.

Unfortunately, the fire has thrown a massive spanner in the works. It has destroyed most of the structure, including the wooden interior. The roof and several walls collapsed. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said safety concerns mean other parts of the structure will require demolition.

The fire was huge, quickly engulfing the building. Strong winds blew embers onto a neighbouring student block too, causing some balconies to also catch fire. There was an evacuation order and trains had to stop running through Oxford Street Station. It took a massive response from the fire services to get the blaze under control.

What now?

Architect LondonThe response to the fire has been really interesting. As a top architect in London with a love for historic architecture, we can appreciate this.

There are some calls to rebuild Hotspur Press. Petitioners want the council and developers to agree to a faithful restoration to its original form.

There has also been a backlash to see who is to blame for the fire. Some point fingers at the developers. Others question whether it was intentional, either arson or an insurance job. The developer behind the student tower plans said the campaigners, Historic England, and other conservation charities had to shoulder the blame because of the delays to the project.

One of the most notable responses is from the Victorian Society. They are now calling for ‘meaningful measures’ to give heritage properties like Hotspur Press more protection. It will be interesting to see what comes of this and if we see changes in regulations for buildings with significant architectural and historical value.
