Does a single building have the power to change an entire city?

Over the last thirty years there have been huge advancements in terms of construction techniques and materials. As a result numerous fascinating buildings have appeared in that time. Many of them have made a huge impression and affected the city where they are located.
Some of the most incredible designs celebrate the history of an area whilst simultaneously looking forward. A passionate architect London clients love working with will take a look at some of these properties.

Cayan Tower in Dubai, UAE

The swirling skyscraper rotates 1.2 degrees each floor, resulting in a swirl that turns 90 degrees by the time it reaches the top floors. The design is eye-catching and is said to offer fantastic wind force reductions. Situated on the waterfront, it stands out even surrounded by other high rise structures.

Emporia in Malmo, Sweden

Shopping centres can rarely say they have architecture that draws you to the entrance. Emporia is different though with its curved amber glass. The scale of the property is incredible; as are the different facilities. As well as retail spaces there are offices, residential spaces, and a huge car park on the roof.

Sailing Tower in Aarhus, Denmark

Not all iconic structures are high rise. This origami inspired sculpture and viewing platform graces the new waterfront neighbourhood. It is instantly eye-catching, especially at night when it is lit up be LEDs.

Suvela Chapel in Espoo, Finland

Situated in a multicultural part of Helsinki, the chapel is designed to serve the needs of the community regardless of their faith. This diversity is reflected in the array of materials used. Wood, concrete, steel, and copper cladding is all combined to create a beautiful structure.

The Orange Cube in Lyon, France

The name of the design centre is very accurate. The most impressive aspect of the design is the huge atrium created with the conical hole. The porous facade allows light to filter inside, making the interior even more inviting.

World Trade Centre Transportation Hub in New York City, US

Also known as the Oculus, the building is designed to resemble a dove in flight. Each year on the anniversary of 9/11 the skylights can be retracted. The design is incredible, symbolising peace.

These are just a few of the iconic buildings that have had the power to change a whole city. There are many other ones worth exploring if you are interested in cutting edge design.
