2017 was a big year for design and architects

At the end of December Dezeen published their Hot List 2017. It charts the top 500 people, brands, organisations and events that people wanted to read about over the last year. The list is varied, featuring everything from popular designers and architects to political figures and brands.

The great thing about the list is that design led retailers and architects continue to dominate. IKEA secured the top spot after a year full of new innovations and engaging stories. A collection of snap fit furnishings that don’t require Allen keys to assemble received a lot of attention. No-waste products were also a popular topic.

Japanese minimalist designer Muji took the second spot following a year where they really captured the importance of audience engagement. Stories about them were very engaging, particularly the one that accompanied the reveal of a compact pre-fabricated house with a price tag of just £21,000.

Architects dominated the rest of the top ten. Peter Zumthor came in third, Bjarke Ingels followed in fourth, and John Pawson climbed an impressive 26 places to sixth. Zaha Hadid Architects, Norman Foster and Tadao Ando were also popular topics.

The incredible thing about the top 500 list is how diverse it is. Entrants come from countries all around the world with seven different nationalities across the top ten alone. The UK claimed the most entrants of any single location though with 104. The US came second with 69.

It is a mark of great pride for us that Coffey Architects was one of the UK entrants on the list. We enjoyed the 181 place after a fantastic year for us.

The Dezeen Hot List 2017 makes interesting reading and is a good way to look back on the past year. Importantly it is the only list in the design-industry that is based entirely on data for searches online and engagement.

At Coffey Architects we are looking forward to an even better 2018 and hope to see our name appear on the list for the third year in a row. We are focused on continuing to improve our position as one of the best architects London has to offer.
