Working with a professional architect

A professional architect can bring a lot of value to different projects. They are a source of advice and should know about planning and building laws. In addition you can discuss ideas with them and get lots of insights into every aspect of the design. Many also offer project management. If you want to work with a reliable architect London has few better than our team at Coffey Architects.

The ARB

When you hire an architect you need to ensure they are who they say they are. People can claim to be architects but may not have the skills and experience. The best thing to do is check on the ARB (Architect Registration Board). All professionals should register and provide their personal details. If you can’t find someone on the list, don’t work with them.

Penalties

Anyone trading as an architect who is not a true professional can face big fines. This happened recently to a man in Manchester and the company Cheshire Architects and Construction. The individual was illegally using the title but was not on the ARB register. He was found guilty of 8 counts of breaching the Architects Act 1997. As a result the court gave a £2,000 fine. The court costs were an additional £3,659.

In a separate case an architect in Aberdeen had to appear before a conduct committee. Ultimately it was found that the individual was guilty of serious professional incompetence. As a result the ARB register removed them from their list. Therefore they can no longer use the architect title.

The Architects Act 1997

Every architect should be familiar with this piece of legislation. It describes the role of the ARB, clarifies the use of titles, and sets out the code of practice and standards.
