Abu Dhabi is the home of some excellent architecture

In Abu Dhabi design and architecture is being prioritised to help make the capital city of the UAE a centre for arts and culture. The project is challenging and ambitious but it could provide incredible rewards.
One of the most wide-ranging projects is Saadiyat. The plan is to turn the whole island into a museum that will compete with renowned landmarks in Europe. The Manarat Al Saadiyat is finished and currently welcoming visitors. The incredible architecture makes it really stand out. It is modern and contemporary, supporting public programmes and welcoming galleries from around the world.

The Arab Emirates Pavilion is also open on the island. It was originally designed by Norman Foster and Partners for the 2010 Shanghai Expo but it now sits on Saadiyat. The architecture is stunning, inspired by the landscape and shaped like a canyon in the desert. The design is iconic and advanced technology and construction techniques were used to create it.

The Abu Dhabi Guggenheim was announced in 2006 with Frank Ghery and Partners selected to design it. In 2011 work started on a site on Saadiyat surrounded by water. Sadly the work was suspended and no completion date has since been stated. Ultimately the plan is to create a building that combines traditional Arabian and modern elements. The museum would feature 13,000 square metres of exhibition space.

A fourth major museum set for Saadiyat is being referred to as the Abu Dhabi Louvre. Another high profile architect is attached to the project in Jean Nouvel. This building will dominate the island when it is finished with a huge dome covering two thirds of the property. The plan is to have 23 permanent galleries as well as temporary space and a children’s museum. Artwork from all around the world will be on display.

At Coffey Architects we can appreciate all of the incredible architecture in Abu Dhabi. It is fantastic to see a project so large that supports the field and uses it to create such a culturally significant site. As one of the most talented architects London has, we would love to see more countries do the same.
