The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is in charge of regulating the architectural field. To call yourself an architect you must register with them and pass their competence check. Then it is a simple case of re-registering each year.

The issue ARB has raised with what they currently do is there are no checks in place to test competency over the course of an architect’s career. The checks only happen when they first register. As a result there is a flaw that could allow people to call themselves architects even if they now fail to provide the right level of service.

With the above in mind the ARB is reviewing its operations. It is planning to introduce changes after a period of research. This will take place until December.

Changes

It is expected that the big change will be that in the future architects will need to showcase their competency when re-registering with ARB. This will prove that each architect maintains and enhances their skills over their career.

The change could also include a re-evaluation of what architects need to cover during their education. For example there may be a bigger focus on things like fire safety and climate change.

There could also be a new range of checks for architects who work on high rise residential buildings. These structures are subject to higher regulations. As a result an architect needs to showcase enhanced competencies to be able to work on them safely.
