Architectural gems in Latin America

Latin America has some of the most incredible architecture in the world. What makes many of the projects even more impressive is their locations. While big cities have plenty of stunning buildings, there are also incredible ones in unexpected locations. As an architect London clients get inspired by, we wanted to look at a few of these gems.

Las Pozas

Imagine finding a surrealist group of structures in a rainforest on a Mexican mountain. That is exactly what Las Pozas is. The idea of architect Edward James, the site is awe-inspiring. The concrete structures and sculptures were built between 1949 and 1984, costing a reported $5million in total.

Quetzalcoatl’s Nest

Naucalpan Mexico has a wonderful landscape of ravines lined with trees. The setting is incredible and also not somewhere you would expect to find an ultra-modern structure shaped like the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. The building is a giant snake and has ten apartments totalling 16,500 square feet. The design is a celebration of organic architecture.

Casa Bola

This is one of the most interesting homes in the whole of Brazil. It is an eight metre sphere sitting on a concrete base. The property is iconic and looks even more unusual alongside its neighbours.

Marble Cathedrals

Not all stunning architecture is artificial. On General Carrera Lake, Chile you can find a series of beautiful islets made of calcium carbonate. The cathedrals, known as the Cathedral, Chapel and Cave, were created by water erosion. The rocks are beautiful, with white, gray, blue, pink, as well as yellow shades.

Capilla Susana Soca

This geometric chapel in Uruguay is a hallmark of architecture in the country in the 1960s. It celebrates the Uruguayan poet and has a really unique, eye-catching design.

New Hope Cemetery

Funeral traditions can have a big influence on architecture because of the rituals. This cemetery in Peru showcases many of these, celebrating the cultural diversity in Lima. It is the second largest cemetery in the world, stretching over 60 hectares of rocky hillsides.

These are just a few of the beautiful, unique pieces of architecture in Latin America. We can appreciate the character and form of each of them.
