How does architecture affect people psychologically?

The design of properties can have a positive or negative impact on the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the people that see and spend time in them. An interesting new study is looking at measuring the contemplative effects that looking at buildings can have on people, using modern fMRI to gauge responses. The aim of the research is to determine what positive benefits can be achieved and give planners information they can use for their future designs.

Contemplative architecture is not a new phenomenon in any way and has been practised for many years on churches and other religious buildings. Holy places make the biggest use of the concept by designing buildings that encourage people to be contemplate and feel uplifted. Similar ideas could easily be utilised on other properties to provide benefits for everybody that can see the structure. In crowded built up areas the effects could be extensive and widespread.

The study involved showing architects pictures of architecture from contemplative and non-contemplative properties, including images of the interiors and exteriors. MRI scans were taken to measure brain activity and see what the response was. Architects were chosen because they are thought to be the most qualified to appreciate the design elements of properties.

The findings show that the design of properties does matter a great deal and offers some amazing opportunities to give people a beneficial experience. The right designs can boost the sense of peace and relaxation as well as improving focus. Architects should keep the experience in mind when designing properties, remembering to account for all of the various stakeholders that will be affected by the buildings they create.

Whether it is public, commercial or residential architecture properties should ensure they sit well in their environments and offer the kind of visual experience people appreciate. Obviously it is difficult to create a design that is universally loved, but there are inspirational properties all around the world to use as guides. As architects in London, we’re dedicated to creating properties which make a positive impact on the lives of everyone who encounters them.
