Does it all seem a bit too farfetched considering buildings that repair themselves? Well, this is just one of the new technologies that will influence architecture of the future.

Another interesting material that has been developed is Electrohromic glass. This could create a future without blinds or curtains. The technology can be turned transparent or opaque whenever you like. This material works by having layers of specially formulated metals and plastics. These windows can also selectively reflect infrared light, preventing indoor overheating.

Self healing concrete is by far the most exciting new material. Tiny cracks in concrete, if not tended to, will seriously damage the whole structure over time. But this new material works by having embedded clay particles. When it comes into contact with water, it excretes chalk, therefore filling the crack.

Aerogel is yet another brilliant material. It is made from a solid glass foam saturated with minuscule air bubbles. It is one of the lightest materials on Earth and is efficient at insulating. One day this will allow architects more freedom in design with this see through material.

Coffey Architects will always keep up to date with the latest news. We strive to create innovative designs, so if you find yourself interested with our work then please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us.
