Designing the megacities of the future

One of the major themes at the recent MIPIM exhibition in France was urbanity. The world is facing some big issues with rising populations and urban development as well as resource usage. Architecture can help with the situation through better placemaking and good design.

The rise of megacities

The United Nations is predicting a huge increase in the number of people who will one day be living in cities. According to their estimate an incredible 6.3 billion people will live in a city by 2050. As a result, this will dramatically increase the size of these urban areas.

The UN also predict there will be 37 megacities around the world by 2025. These areas generally include major capitals where there is a thriving environment for businesses and jobs, housing, transport, and food. Jing-Jin-Ji, the capital region in China that includes Beijing and Tianjin, will be the first megacity to be home to over 100 million people.

Sustainability

The problem with rapid urbanisation is that it is very difficult to sustain. Growth can easily get out of hand and leave the infrastructure and amenities under a lot of strain since more people are trying to use it. If this occurs it can seriously damage the environment and put residents at risk of health and wellbeing problems.

Better planning is needed to ensure that urban areas are designed to encourage community and belonging. There also needs to be a focus on really good placemaking. Buildings designs should be conscientious and open spaces are also necessary.

Coffey Architects understands the risk that rapid urbanisation causes. Fortunately we can play a part in helping to make it more sustainable. We are proud to be an approachable architect London based clients can call on. We can design properties that will benefit the area and the inhabitants. This could be key with urban development.
