Earthships – outstanding examples of recycling

Earthships are arguably the most incredible examples of environmentally conscious architecture. They are made entirely from naturally occurring and recycled materials and forgo modern amenities for more eco-friendly alternatives. For example the properties typically have no mains electricity, generally obtaining power from solar, wind, or ground source technology.

Surprisingly the concept of the Earthship is not new. It was first revealed in 1971 by Michael Reynolds. He chose to build homes in Taos, New Mexico using empty aluminium cans, bottles, and tyres. The first home was completed in 1988.

Whilst many people have written off Earthships as outdated ideas on environmentally conscious architecture they are arguably more popular now than ever before. There are now properties in every state in the USA as well as more than 20 countries around the world, including England. The largest concentration of them is in Taos where the movement began. There is a community of 70 residences and properties are even available for overnight rental.

The greatest thing about Earthships is not the materials that are used to build them, as much as this is fantastic. The thing that truly stands out is the designs. Each is unique and allows the designer to showcase their creativity. The thing that really sets them apart is that each design promotes practicality and aesthetics, creating spaces that serve their needs whilst looking fantastic.

Rather than becoming outdated the idea of Earthships and their designs have evolved over time whilst still sticking to the same philosophy of recycling and off-grid living. They are as impressive now as they have ever been.

At Coffey Architects we always find it surprising and inspiring to look at different architectural designs and movements. Earthships certainly stand out and showcase exactly what can be done in terms of recycling materials and allowing creativity.
