Are there any greener substitutes for concrete?

One of the things that has helped us secure a place as the most passionate architect London clients can call on is we make every project special. Every design is innovative, tailored to the specifics provided by the client and the site itself. Having already completed a diverse range of projects during our time in business, the skills possessed by our people are incredibly varied, making them the perfect partners.

Concrete is literally what holds our towns and cities together. From apartment complexes and homes to sidewalks, viaducts, and bridges, one cannot deny the crucial nature of this material on contemporary urban life.

Something else you may have heard about commercial concrete is it can release carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. This fact may lead people to look elsewhere when they are designing a structural that is eco-friendly. Fortunately there are many green alternatives that can be used if you want to avoid using concrete in a structure.

Rammed earth is one such alternative. Surprisingly walls made of it have a somewhat similar feel to concrete. They can be manufactured using nothing more than dirt that has been tamped down tightly into a wooden configuration. This approach has been utilised by our civilisation for over a millennium and lasts for a significant period. Through the use of bamboo or rebar, buildings of this configuration can be made safer. Additionally, mechanical dampers lower the degree of labour that’s necessary to produce stocky walls.

While not concrete exactly, Hempcrete is comparable. It is created from the hemp plant’s woody inner fibres, hence its name. These fibres are restrained with lime so that shapes which are both light and strong can be manufactured. Since they’re lightweight, they can minimise the energy that’s used to move the blocks immensely.

At Coffey Architects, we have managed to build a respectable reputation for producing buildings that are both magnificently crafted and intelligent in their design. Whatever the task that lies before us, we choreograph the demands of deadlines, budgets, and strategic goals, with the result being one you can be proud to call your own.
