A brand new guide was released earlier in November to celebrate the iconic architecture of the London Underground. The map includes stations all across the capital and charts their unique features, helping visitors to tour their way around them. Stunning photographs and information about each featured station is provided.
The guide includes stations designed by celebrated architects like Norman Foster, Charles Holden, and Leslie William Green. Each of them contributed something fantastic the design world and showcased how these busy transport links can be made more enjoyable for visitors.
The architecture of the actual stations themselves is not the only thing that is celebrated in the guide. Beautiful features such as roundels, original clocks, signage, and even murals. These elements add depth to the spaces with wonderful design touches and aesthetics.
Several of the signs included in the guide feature Johnston lettering. The typeface was specifically developed for the Underground in 1913. The design was meant to enhance the corporate identity of the business and was initially only meant for printing. It became so popular that it was included on numerous enamel signs. Surprisingly the typeface was so successful that it became the font of choice for public transport in London in 1933.
The iconic murals by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi are also featured in the guide. The Scottish artist was one of the founding fathers of the pop art movement. When Tottenham Court Road station was redecorated in 1984 a series of murals he had created were installed. The works are colourful and eye catching, featuring frenetic designs. Paolozzi’s signature still remains in several places too.
