Noble materials get better with age

One of the things that have helped us to become the best architect London based clients can choose to work with is we have a different outlook on sustainability. We don’t want to just select materials that will last for a long time. Instead we want to work with ones that will look better with age, ensuring the design matures and gains new aesthetics as it does. That helps to enhance the sustainable properties even more.

To achieve the above we put a huge amount of effort into choosing the right materials. We look at what we can use and how it can be utilised so that it will gain a beautiful patina. Timbers such as oak are fantastic for this and age really well. Concrete is also surprisingly good and the colour can really stand out.

We refer to the materials that gain a better patina with age as “noble”. You can see them in many of our projects, including the Modern Mews. This project and our thoughts on working with different kinds of resources were included in a recent issue of Financial Times Weekend.

Sustainability is becoming more and more integral to architecture. It showcases planning for the future and means that properties will leave a smaller carbon footprint over the course of their lifecycle. In the past bad designs have caused problems for various environments and resulted in higher costs to change and update the properties. With good design and great materials that look better with age both of these can be avoided.

If you are planning a project, whether for a home, a commercial space, or a public property, you can call on us for help with the design and selecting the materials. Our passion is easy to see and from our past projects you can get a great idea of the end results.
