On the 1st of November the winner of the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture was announced. This year the award was given to the multi-million pound redevelopment of Hastings Pier by dRMM Architects, awarding it the title of the best new building in the UK.
The redevelopment of Hastings Pier was a very interesting project, particularly when you take into account the wonderful history. It was first built in 1872 and enjoyed many years of success as a pleasure pier. The facilities were very highly regarded, especially the pavilion. The venue saw performances by a number of high profile acts in the 60s and 70s, including The Rolling Stones and The Who.
Sadly the pier was severely damaged in 1990 due to heavy storms. A refurbishment was subsequently done but the structure was sold several times in the following years. Closure came in 2006 when it was discovered that the structure was unsafe. A fire in October 2010 caused extensive damage to the wooden buildings on the pier.
The fire could have been the end of Hastings Pier but there was huge support for redevelopment. This progressed over the following years. National Heritage Lottery Funding was subsequently secured and a £14.2 million redevelopment project began in 2013. The pier opened again in 2016 following the completion of the work.
The incredible regeneration of the pier saw it earn the prestigious architecture prize. The thing that was most beloved about the project is the use of sustainable timber on the cladding of the new buildings. The open space for visitors to enjoy created a second huge selling point.
A notable thing the judges loved about the project is how much local support the redevelopment gained. Part of the funding was earned by asking 3,000 shareholders to each buy a £100 stake in the pier. This shows just how much the local community was behind the work.
At Coffey Architects we were proud to give our support to all of the nominees for the Stirling Prize. The awards ceremony was fantastic and gave the chance to explore and appreciate some stunning, inspiring projects. This kind of thing is very important for us, especially if we want to hold on to our positions as one of the most thoughtful architects London has to offer.
