The rise of high-rise construction in London

London has been one of the world’s major cities for many centuries. The architecture of this great city has changed over the years to reflect the changing times. From the magnificent English Baroque style of St Paul’s Cathedral to the awe-inspiring Gothic Revival style of architecture displayed at St. Pancras railway station, London is rife with many different styles of architecture. Modern architecture is perhaps best exemplified by the high-rise building: tall, impressive constructions that can dominate a landscape. With examples such as the Shard and the Gherkin standing tall on London’s skyline, the city has become renowned for its iconic high-rise buildings, and even more are incoming.

High rise construction is witnessing a boom, with figures over the past year indicating that high rise buildings could well come to dominate the general landscape of the capital. Over the past twelve months, the number of planning applications for high rise buildings has risen over 10%, with the number of towers actually under construction seeing a 56% rise over the last year. 263 buildings over 20 storeys high are being proposed. Of the towers planned and being built, the vast majority are for residential purposes. Architects in London have been seeking solutions for the huge population increase in the city over the past several years.

High rise buildings will dominate the landscape of central London, with a huge number of planning applications based around Milbank, Tower Hamlets and the Thames. Roughly 15,000 homes will be made with the construction of these high rise towers, hopefully helping to ease with the housing crisis that the city is currently facing and allowing it to better deal with the growing population.
