Royal Mail sell Mount Pleasant, unlocking potential for new homes

Royal Mail have made the decision to sell 6 acres of its North London sorting office, Mount Pleasant for £193.5m. Contracts were recently signed with Taylor Wimpey; the developer plans to build houses on the site. The project is fantastic for the area, creating new housing in a location were demand is high. At Coffey Architects, a leading architect London clients can rely on to produce excellent designs, we are excited to see what the architecture will look like.

Further investments will be made by Royal Mail to separate the office site from the new housing plots. This deal will prove to be extremely beneficial for London, and its architects, as the planning consent was secured to make 681 residential units as well as public and retail space. An additional 0.27 acre plot will also be marketed at a later date to create office space.

This project will provide many jobs for architects and builders in London and surrounding areas. It’s expected to be complete by 2021, costing £100m.

Not only will it provide jobs, but the development will also secure a future for the key London operational site, and provide a wonderful opportunity for regenerating the area surrounding the mail centre. The regeneration will create affordable housing, public spaces, and community facilities.

The plans will bring together two London Boroughs, Camden and Islington, whose Councils had both strongly opposed the project. The scheme was also opposed by many residents, however it has been said it will provide an attractive return on capital.

Social enterprises submitted the initial designs, and had obtained full support from London mayor, Sadiq Khan, under the Community Right to Build rules.

Coffey Architects are interested to see how this project turns out. It could have a positive impact on the area, a location just a short distance from our office. We hope the work is to a very high standard and benefits the area.
