Our team of specialists looks at each part of the brief and comes up with proposals others would not consider. This is because we like thinking outside of the box. Once we come up with a plan of action, we send in the finest architect London has to support you.
The AYA 2022 shortlists for the Private Housing Architect of the Year Award have been revealed. We are proud to say we have a place on the lists. Back in July, Building Design had announced each architect that managed to get onto the shortlist. They are now doing a series to look at architects on the list. The awards will be given out on October 18th.
The judges for the awards include Bernadette Cunningham, the director at Thornsett, and Julian Robinson, LSE’s director of states. Also, there is Maria Cheung, the head of interior design at Squire and Partners. James McCosh, a partner at van Heyningen & Howard Architects is here too. Then there is Michál Cohen, the director and co-founder at Walters & Cohen Architects. Another judge is Edmund Fowles, the director and co-founder at Feilden Fowles. Finally, we have Manisha Pater, the senior partner at PRP, and Rafael Marks, the principal at Penoyre & Prasad.
Our work
Now that we know a little about the awards, let’s discuss our contribution to the shortlist. Our firm submitted two schemes in Croydon, another in Woking, and a fourth in Bermondsey. The latter is the focus here.
Bermondsey’s London Square is part of a bigger collaborative masterplan. Its aim is to restore a neglected 19th century industrial estate. We want to turn it into a lively mixed-use scheme by integrating commercial and residential premises inside the public realm. Our proposal includes a mixed tenure of 22 intermediate/affordable houses. There are also 49 market houses. This is in addition to Tannery Arts’ gallery and maker studios.
Our scheme is driven by its views from the south. The aim was to supply a suitable backdrop to the Tannery Arts building. Thus, we have designed a “white bar” of deck access, dual aspect, residential units. Due to the contrasting materiality, the current building can stay legible as a unique form. This is a much better option than subsuming it in extra brick.
The dual aspect flats come with modern shutters. You could open and close these to modulate shade, sunlight, and privacy, animating a pattern that changes frequently. This enlivens and enriches the facade with habitation signs.
