Striking architecture from 2018

As we near the end of the year it is nice to look back on the most striking architecture from 2018. There are plenty of cutting edge designs and celebrations of great work. Join an architect London clients always enjoy working with as we look at some of these projects. There are several in the UK capital but many others around the world.

Qattan Foundation – Ramallah, West Bank, Palestine

This building is stunning for its design as well as the situation in which it was built. It stands as a sign of the future at a time when there is still a lot of conflict. The modern design is stunning and there are plenty of great facilities including a library, theatre and gallery.

V&A Dundee – Dundee, Scotland

This temporary exhibition space has a powerful design that takes inspiration from the Scottish cliffs. It has overcome several years of delays as well as budget problems to become one of the most iconic new buildings in the UK.

Battersea Arts Centre – London, England

London already has lots of iconic venues so it is really saying something that this is one of the most atmospheric. There are many beautiful features, including the ceiling in the main hall. The design is even more incredible because there was a huge fire in the property during construction.

Centre for Contemporary Arts, Goldsmiths College – London, England

Transforming the Victorian building was a challenge for the architects because of the layout. The design has a fantastic sequence and some really beautiful details. This includes a number of handmade elements such as pink cement.

15 Clerkenwell Close – London, England

This is one of the most innovative office and apartment buildings in London. It has a very striking facade of rough stone and glass. Sadly the project has garnered controversy. The local council wants the building to be demolished because it differs from the planning application. The architect is currently appealing the decision.

These are just a few of the incredible projects from 2018. There are other buildings, exhibitions and proposals worth note. Have a look back at a great year for architecture and you’ll be even more excited for what is to come.
