Supporting culture with innovative architectural work

The Tricycle Theatre in Brent was opened in 1980 as the permanent home of the Wakefield Tricycle Company, an international touring theatre group that staged new plays and children’s theatre. The theatre is renowned for its world-class productions and its focused embrace of the diversity that exists within its local community. The Tricycle is a thriving hub that offers a creative environment and enables the connection of local residents. The theatre itself is steeped in history, and serves as a culturally significant structure.

As architects in London, we focus on the design, development and construction of architecture that plays a pivotal role in the way we function socially, personally and professionally. We were approached to help transform the Tricycle Theatre, and we developed a proposal that enhances the facilities and all that they offer whilst maintaining the integrity of a much loved and respected London theatre.

Our design concept aimed at strengthening the position of the theatre and its proximity to Kilburn High Road and relocating certain components to different internal locations to use the space in the best way possible. The theatre itself brings the youth of Brent together through theatrical performance, along with supporting learning and the development of skills. Architecture can support its surroundings, and the project is designed to integrate the theatre into the borough and become a place of congregation for the local community. The transformation of the theatre will help to unite various societal groups through art and performance.

Part of our vision for the scheme includes the creation of space for informal locations that will accommodate street, promenade and environmental theatre. Our proposal for the theatre ultimately aims to create a social and educational environment for all children, regardless of background. We believe in the preservation of culture and entertainment, and by making a truly communal environment. We hope that our architects in London can help the theatre to grow in strength and attract world class talent to teach and engage with the young performers and artists of the future.
