A tough time for 20th century cinema buildings

Covid had a massive impact on various industries. Film and cinema by extension had a really hard time. It was simply impossible for filming to take place in the majority of situations. Cinemas couldn’t open because of restrictions. Even after things began to improve, it has been hard. There has also been a big shift with more people choosing to stream at home. Sadly that means we are at risk of losing many cinemas. As top architects in London, we want to have a closer look at this today.

A wonderful history

Architects LondonDid you know the first moving picture and first celluloid film were both shot in Britain? From these very early origins we’ve had a massive love for cinema. At one point cinemas were among the most important amenities in towns and cities. Incredibly, in 1939 before declaring war on Germany (WWII), all entertainment venues including cinemas had to close. Within a month they were open again as a sign we would not cower in fear. This brought a surge in popularity, with attendances rising to 1 billion in 1940 and over 1.5 billion in 1943 – 1945.

The popularity of film and cinema means we have many incredible 20th century cinemas all across the UK. This includes some beautiful Art Deco buildings as well as newer modern properties.

In 2020 there was an impressive 878 cinemas. Sadly the number has fallen in the last few years, with some having to close because of low attendances and high operating costs. Massive chain Cineworld is also facing the decision to close 25% of their 103 sites.

A tough challenge

There are fears about the future for many of these 20th century cinemas. Some of them have protection, but listings are rare because the buildings are so prolific. As a result, the bar for getting a national listing is very high.

Without protection, some of the buildings could be lost entirely to redevelopment. Sadly some see this as the only option in many cases because the properties aren’t easy to adapt to different uses. Large auditoriums generally only work as a small number of different venues.

Not the end

However, losing the buildings is not guaranteed. Experts argue that creative designs can save them. For example, there could be redevelopments that save the facades but then transform the rest. Or they could take a cinema and turn it into something stunning like a multi-purpose venue for arts and culture.

There are also arguments that cinemas can be vital parts of a high street if they diversify. For example, they could also offer other community amenities such as cafes, bars, and space for events and meetings. This can make the areas more active and boost the local economy.
