We’re currently looking forward to the upcoming “Building Images” exhibition, which is opening at Clerkenwell’s Sto Werkstatt on the 4th of February. The show is made up of architectural photographs from the 2015 Arcaid Images Architectural Photography Awards, with a particular focus on the way we sense and experience different spaces.
The exhibits are divided into four categories: Interiors, Exteriors, Sense of Place and Buildings in Use, showcasing the many different ways architecture impacts on our daily lives as well as the different ways we use it. The judging panel chose the images on the basis of their successful use of atmosphere, composition and sense of place.
The competition was won by Portuguese architectural photographer Fernando Guerra, for his dynamic image of people moving around the different levels of EPFL Quartier Nord SwissTech Convention Center in Ecublens, Switzerland. The judges felt that this photograph captured a real sense of life and vitality by capturing the rhythms of people interacting with the architecture.
Photography makes up an important part of our work here at Coffey Architects and is one of our most essential visual tools, as it is for all architects. Since the practice was established, we have been consistently informed and inspired by Phil Coffey’s ongoing photography project, Outside. This series documents a diverse variety of landscapes and cultures from across the world, helping us to understand how people live, work and play in different environments.
We believe that as London based architects our role is to create empathetic structures that are based around real human needs, and photography has played an important role in informing us throughout our mission. Make sure to attend this exhibition if you are interested in the role of photography in architecture, as well as learning more about how architectural design impacts our lives in many ways each and every day.
