June will see an exhibition like no other take please in London. Whereas events of this nature usually run over the course of three or four days, the London Festival of Architecture takes place across every day of the month. The remarkable length of this event is testament to the rich, varied and expansive nature of how we see and define the idea of architecture in the modern age, and we’re sure every architecture enthusiast and architect in London is looking ahead to this event with eager anticipation.
The theme for this year’s Festival is community. While at first this might seem like quite a broad subject, to us this makes perfect sense. Although in basic terms, it is people who make up a community, we know and understand how the buildings in which those people live and work can have a huge influence on how that community takes shape. It is a matter which is always close to the forefront of our thinking and our work when we are engaged on an architectural project in London.
For the most part, we are focused on ensuring that our architectural work matches the wishes, requirements and ambitions of the person or organisation commissioning it. However, we are always aware that the result of our work does not exist in isolation. Allowing the design to be informed and influenced by the environment and the prevailing sense of the community enables us to reach a far more beneficial conclusion to the project.
One of the most interesting aspects of the London Festival of Architecture is that it features a section comparing our city to other major cities around the world. We are particularly looking forward to this part of the exhibit. Through a comparison of cities of similar stature, it will be possible to see just how influential architecture really is on the nature of the communities who live in them. As well as being fascinating, it also provides us with valuable information that guides our work.
