A hidden gem with a surprisingly insightful design

Across London there are many interesting and unique ideas about housing to observe from various periods in history. From the modern blocks of apartments to post war estates, it can be enlightening to look at the designs and the philosophies that the designers had.

One property that is very interesting is the Fitzhugh Grove estate on Wandsworth Common. There are just five buildings on the site but each one shows the insights that architect Sir John Leslie Martin had. The properties were constructed in the 50s and collectively are one of the most impressive post war residential gems you will see in the city.

The most impressive thing about the buildings is how the philosophies held when they were constructed ring true today. The flats were designed with nature and the wellbeing of residents in mind, ensuring they had good views, quality air and received sunlight too. The environmental ideas are surprisingly similar to those that architects hold today.

Sir John Leslie Martin had a beautiful vision for housing. He was one of the most prominent architects in the 50s when the London County Council Architects Department was in its golden age. Fitzhugh Grove is one of his lesser known projects but it deserves recognition for the enduring ideas. The fact that the residents still hold the same passion for the environment today as when the property was first built is fantastic.

Martin’s philosophies are inspirational and can be applied to modern designs effectively. At Phil Coffey Architects we see the wisdom in his ideas and hold very similar beliefs in terms of ensuring architecture and the environment work well together.
