Bamboo: a robust, eco-friendly building material

Around the world there are beautiful examples of architecture made from a vast array of different materials. The designs are impressive and inspirational, especially those that utilise sustainable, eco-friendly, local materials.

In several Asian countries there are some very interesting trends occurring in the architecture world. On one hand architects are looking at technology and examining how it can drive design forward. On the other there is a big movement towards using natural materials.

In Vietnam and China there are a number of beautiful structures made from locally produced bamboo. The material is fantastic, offering strength and flexibility. Many people have referred to it as a much greener alternative to steel because of its sustainability.

One interesting project is a moveable modular hotel made from bamboo rods. The structure is truly impressive for its flexibility and diversity. It can be adapted in a number of ways, including expansion upwards and outwards depending on the needs of the setting. To accomplish the expansions additional pieces of bamboo are used. The rods are held together by ropes instead of nails, with pieces slotting easily together. This means the structure is simple to erect and dismantle so it can be moved. The hotel leaves a very small imprint on the site when it is erected.

Bamboo also offers another benefit in that it can be reused and recycled. This means that structures can leave a very small footprint, with few of the materials going to waste. Many of the buildings have a lifecycle of between 30 and 40 years. Once they come to their end the bamboo can be used for compost rather than wasted.

Architects outside of Asia are looking at the benefits that bamboo can offer as a construction material. In Bali a design company has even built a series of ten bespoke homes made almost entirely from it. They vary in size and scale, with some reaching six stories in height. The structures are very beautiful and have a natural look.

At London based Coffey Architects we are always exploring new materials. Bamboo clearly offers some really impressive benefits and can be used to beautiful affect. We take inspiration from the fact that there are stunning buildings built from it in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, a city where just 0.25% of the space is parkland. In dense urban areas like this a natural, eco-friendly construction material looks amazing.
