Here at Coffey Architects, we’re excited about embarking on our latest project, which will involve the redevelopment of a one-acre site in Central London which is currently home to the council-run Holborn Library and Cockpit Yard arts space. Working in collaboration with developers U+I and Camden Council, we will remodel and revitalise the existing library, create 105 new homes, add new studio spaces, and design an archive facility for local study.
This is set to be a complex project as the space plays so many different roles, comprising private residences, public areas, and spaces of work and study. We plan to strike a balance between the private and the public to create a space that gives its users the best of both worlds.
Our plans involve extensive use of glass to create a feeling of light, space and openness, while still providing clear delineations between the different areas. The studio spaces will be situated on multiple levels beneath a large atrium, encouraging collaboration between artists and giving a sense of community spirit, while also enabling privacy for deep thinking. The glass and metal structure will allow natural light to enter every corner of the building, contributing to optimal conditions for creation and inspiration.
Like us, U+I are committed to the creation of private and public spaces that deliver long term, practical value to the lives of the people who use them. This project follows on from their previous project, Clapham One, which involved the development of a sports centre, library and 136 homes on Clapham High Street.
Working together, we will create a new multi-functional space for leisure, work, and living, right in the heart of Central London. U+I will take the first steps towards developing the project over the next few months, and the goal is for the planning application to be submitted by the end of this year. We look forward to using our architectural expertise to help bring this creative new space to life.
