Ensuring safe and stable structures

A notable Georgian property in Barnes, South West London collapsed during the last week of November. Although no official report has yet been completed into the matter, the collapse happened while underground basement work was being conducted. This demonstrates the importance of emphasising safety and stability when any kind of work is being carried out to renovate or alter a property – something that we are always deeply committed to in our architectural work.

London property owners are increasingly turning to basement building, expansion and renovation in a bid to maximise the space available to them. It’s an understandable approach, considering the cost of living space in London at the moment. Whereas basement conversions can be highly successful, it is not something that is necessarily suitable for all buildings or areas.

When it comes to residential architecture and building, preparation and planning are key to safe, successful work. Before undertaking any kind of project, we always take every possible step to understand the potential impact on the area. This is as much to minimise possible environmental damage as to help us become aware of potential risk factors. Correct site survey work will establish if there’s the risk of an unstable structure or the potential for a building to collapse. In such cases we would always work with you to develop a safer, completely secure set of architectural plans.

The purpose of any building is to provide shelter, safety and stability, no matter what kind of property is being built. Should any foreseeable risk of collapse exist, then it cannot be said that the building is meeting this fundamental requirement. When working with us you will find that we create the perfect balance of creativity, functionality and attention to detail that ensures beautiful, stable structures. If you wish to talk to an architect in London about any kind of commercial or residential project, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
