We were recently happy to be featured in Lighting magazine, the publication which focuses on illumination in architecture, with an article about our recent Exposure exhibition. Our founder Phil Coffey discussed how the work carried out by our architects in London is informed by his ongoing photography project and the different ways people experience architecture throughout the world.
Beauty is something which we feel in our gut rather than in our intellectual minds, and when it comes to architecture, light plays a major role in this. Light has always been one of the most crucial elements for any architect to consider, as it can completely transform the entire aesthetic, atmosphere and function of a property. Lighting is a factor which we incorporate into our designs in a thoughtful and sensitive way, inspired as always by the architecture we have seen and experienced around the world.
One of the photographs featured in the magazine was of the interior of an Amazonian family home, which was built using local materials such as leaves and branches. As the afternoon light streams in, there is a unique and distinctive atmosphere which encapsulates the visceral experience of living and working in such a structure.
We understand the instinctive, natural and emotional reactions that light can create in a structure, and seek to create buildings which are fully alive not only through their forms and shapes but also in the way the light passes through them. Of course, the lighting effects in a property are often purely down to chance, and as adventurous architects we are always open to exploring the possibilities that this can bring. No matter what kind of project we are working on, light will continue to be one of our most important tools for the creation of memorable and beautiful spaces where people can live, work and play.
