Guildhall has been the centre of city power since the 12th century. It is thought that the word itself derives from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning payment. 800 years ago, the Lord Mayor of London rivalled the monarchy for prestige and influence, and it was in this location that he and the ruling merchant class held court and fine-tuned the trading regulations and laws that helped to create London’s wealth. Today, Guildhall remains the home of the City of London Corporation. It serves as a venue for glittering banquets that are held in honour of heads of state and other dignitaries, royal occasions and celebrations for historical anniversaries.
London is one of the world’s leading financial and business centres and Guildhall is a magnificent and rare Grade 1 listed landmark that provides a sensational backdrop for corporate events. The building offers a unique combination of a historical setting whilst being fully equipped with facilities and features for modern business requirements.
The building survived the Great Fire of London and the Blitz, and is the one and only secular stone structure dating from before 1666 which is still standing in the capital. Remains of a long-lost Roman amphitheatre were discovered in 1987, and are an indication that the site of Guildhall held significance as far back as the Roman times. The present building plays an important role in the city; it hosts meetings of the city’s elected assembly, the court of the Common Council, and is the venue for the Honorary Freedom of the City Ceremony.
London is filled with incredible architecture that plays an equally important role in history and modern society. The city itself is not characterised by any particular architectural style. It has accumulated its buildings over different periods of time, and architects in London have adapted and modified many structures over the years. The Guildhall, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London are notable as they predate 1666 but the city on the whole boasts an array of 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century architectural construction.
Since 2004 the London Festival of Architecture has celebrated the importance of past and present architecture and design. We are a dedicated team of skilled and experienced architects in London with a commitment to creating commercial, public and residential architecture that integrates seamlessly with and informs its surroundings. We strive to create fantastic structures that facilitate and enhance function. We aim to construct buildings both in the UK and abroad that will stand the test of time and successfully provide the backdrops and venues to the changing times and evolving eras.
