History

Rio de Janeiro was the first World Capital of Architecture in 2020, celebrating how the Brazilian city promotes safety, resilience, and sustainability. Copenhagen was the second city to take the crown in 2023, showcasing how architecture and culture have the power to respond to environmental challenges and other problems.

Barcelona is the 2026 World Capital of Architecture. Again the focus is on showcasing how cities can respond to challenges and ensure they maximise public good for current and future residents. This takes us to the recent announcement that Beijing will take the title in 2029.
