The Architects Journal (AJ) Small Projects awards have a special place in our hearts. We are previous winners and have had several nominations over the years. Our success here has been one of the many things that have helped us become one of the most notable architects London has. As a result we always keep an eye out to see which projects they feature each year.
A special anniversary
The 2020 awards are extra special because it is the 25th anniversary. The celebration of small projects launched in 1996. Since then there have been all kinds of wonderful works gaining the recognition they deserve.
Why are small projects so special?
The great thing about celebrating small projects is they can be really ingenious. The restrictions in terms of site size and budget mean that designers have to be creative and find the perfect solutions. Only projects with a contact value of £250,000 or less can qualify for the awards.
Another thing that makes the awards special is they celebrate a wide array of different categories. For example there are celebrations of extensions, small homes, workspaces, shops and even pavilions. The projects can be all over the UK, celebrating the amount of talent here.
Sustainability
One of the most interesting categories is Sustainable Project. This puts more light on projects that actively try to promote sustainability and less harm to the environment. It is still a vital area and architects can do more to be green and eco friendly.
Launch
The 2020 awards officially launched at an event in London on November 12th. Entries are now open on the AJ website. All the information you need to enter is available here. Projects that make it onto the shortlist will be revealed in March 2020.
