World’s largest building

Currently, the title of world’s largest building (by floorspace) is held by AvtoVAZ. The Russian automobile manufacturer’s Main Assembly Building in Tolyatti covers a massive 6 million square metres. It opened in 1970, and has held the crown ever since. Interestingly, the town was built around the plant.

The goal of the AvtoVAZ plant was to allow cost effective mass production of popular economy cars. Significantly, the building has a very simple design with multiple production lines. This ensures the company can maximise economies of scale and outputs.

New proposals

AvtoVAZ could finally lose the crown if new plans by SpaceX and Tesla come to fruition. They are proposing to build a massive factory in Texas to produce semiconductors and chips. Amazingly, the proposals are to create a 9.3 million square metre building with two symmetrical wings. It would comfortably be the biggest building in the world. The new building, referred to as Terafab, would include a number of key facilities to allow production, testing, and packing. It has an interesting design, with a curving roof. Why

Demand for semiconductors and chips has been increasing for years, driven by advances in computing, electric vehicles, smart tech, and AI. SpaceX and Tesla said they are forecasting their demands will outstrip global supply. As a result, while encouraging current suppliers to expand, they are looking to create Terafab to ensure they can produce the components they need quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the project. There is certainly a strong case for it, including ensuring the American companies can manufacture key components domestically. The estimate is the first phase will cost close to $17bn.
