We recently wrote about how amazed we were about being added to three shortlists for different RIBA regional awards. Our projects, Modern Detached, Hidden House, and Dana Research Centre at the Science Museum, were all selected. As the awards evenings have approached we have been eagerly awaiting the results.
It is with immense pride that we can reveal that the Modern Detached has become an award winner.
The Modern Detached was praised for how well the architecture sits in the comfortable suburban setting. We evaluated the forms of other properties and natural features in the area to ensure the property would be right at home rather than potentially detracting from the aesthetics of the setting. Materials were chosen very carefully and the finished effect is wonderful.
The interior of the property is as astonishing as the exterior and we put the same effort in to choosing the right materials. When you enter the first thing that will surprise you is the height of the property. It is a dramatic sight but the design is controlled and it doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Throughout the property there are numerous open living spaces, each designed with care. The volumes and materials connect very well, showing that the home is for shared family space. A wide palette of materials was used from concrete to brickwork, black stained oak panelling to bronze metallic panels. The combination of them is really impressive.
The whole design was well thought-out and considered. We hope it will inspire other designers and architects to take the same approach we did, particularly in suburban settings. We believe that architecture and the natural settings should complement each other effectively.
