Scotland’s largest architecture festival

The LFA got underway on June 1st. It is a great event with plenty for visitors to enjoy. If you have questions for an architect London Festival of Architecture is unmissable.

A second annual event is also taking place this month from the 8th until the 24th. The Architecture Fringe is the largest independent show in Scotland. It returns for the third year with a new theme: Common/Senses. There will be over 70 events across the country.

The Fringe’s programme is very diverse, exploring the built environment in a number of different ways. For example there will be exhibitions, tours, talks, live dance and performance, and also a summer school.

Highlights

Although the programme has plenty of interesting events, there are a number of highlights. They include:

Frankentypes will look at hybrid topographies and how combining elements of different types of property can resolve social issues.

Facades/Fronts will use dance to explore the link between identity and Aberdeen’s civil buildings.

Salon des Refuses takes an interesting look at proposals that didn’t get built and competitions with no winner.

The Messenger coming to Mellestrain is a site specific installation of four brand new contemporary sculptures.

There will also be a series of talks around the main theme of the event. Speakers include international critics, renowned artists, and award winning architects.

Themes

Although the main theme for the Fringe is Common/Senses, a number of other important themes will be up for discussion. For example events will look at things like community land use, women in architecture, and people who have been left behind by urban planners.

As you can see June is a great month for architecture, whether you are visiting London or Scotland. You can view the full programmes for each of the events online.
