Changes to what architecture students will learn

At Coffey Architects we know how vital it is to keep learning. It is important in our field because architecture evolves so much over time. That means it is always wise to look ahead and learn new skills. This approach is one of the reasons we have some of the top architects London has to offer.

Curriculum changes

Architects LondonYesterday the ARB revealed they will be adding a range of new subjects into the curriculum for architecture students. Universities will have to add these to their courses following a consultation period which ends on 23rd April.

ARB has made the decision to expand the curriculum to ensure that students learn more about some of the most pressing topics in the architecture field. The focus is on two very broad areas; fire and life safety as well as sustainability. Individual things students may need to learn more about include:

  • Having an ethical approach to fire safety
  • The health and safety consequences of poor designs
  • Risk management
  • A closer look at the science of fire generation as well as how fires and smoke can spread
  • The role of climate science in making informed decisions
  • How design can play a role in climate change
  • Relationships between buildings, settlements and climate, as well as how to design low and zero carbon buildings

The list of potential new topics is extensive and includes a huge number of areas of concern. Fire and health and safety in particular is one area the ARB thinks more architecture students need to learn about, especially after Grenfell.

These changes to the curriculum will be a temporary expansion while the ARB takes a deeper look at what students need to learn. This could mean even bigger changes in the future. They are also considering things like the current paths to becoming an architect and if they need to change. That could mean the length of time it takes to get a degree changes and more focus on work experience.
