Remembering World Architecture Day

October 7th was World Architecture Day (WAD). The annual event is a celebration of the built environment and advances in the field. It also looks at the challenges that the industry has to face. As one of the best architects London has, we would like to take a look back at WAD, the theme, and some of the most interesting ideas.

What is WAD?

The event was the idea of the UIA (Union of Architects), an international organisation that represents specialists all around the world. It has been held every year since 2005, growing in scale since then. Now there are events all around the world as architects, developers, and other specialists showcase their work and explore ideas. There is even a push to get more people to think about a career in architecture.

Architecture – housing for all

Architects LondonThis was the theme for this year’s event. The goal was to push for more affordable homes and look at how architects can boost access to safe housing. This is important, especially as it is now part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. To stress the importance, more than a billion people currently live in slum or informal housing.

Architects have the power to create homes that are safe, sustainable and ethical. Good design and site planning can make all the difference.

Climate change

While the main theme was improving housing, there were other issues to look at. For example the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada took a close look at designing built environments that are climate-resilient. Construction and operating buildings in Canada account for nearly 40% of the carbon dioxide emissions in the country. However, better designs can cut this. Doing so would also help to reduce the rate of global heating.

The RIAC was looking at how changes to energy efficient designs would help improve the situation. They also addressed the importance of good land use, choosing the right building materials, and taking care with construction waste and water consumption.

Technology

Another hot topic was the use of technology. There are lots of new practices that are now becoming a norm in the industry. For example more and more architects are using 3D mapping to look at sites. Drones are very popular too because they can map various aspects of a project.
