Three projects on the RIBA London Awards shortlist

The shortlist of projects that will be in the running to win RIBA’s London Awards for this year is now available. It features 76 projects from all across the city. We are proud to reveal that Coffey Architects is among the firms whose work has been acknowledged. We want to have a closer look here, then if you want to work with passionate architects in London, you should choose us.

The shortlist

Architects LondonAs we said, in total 76 projects are on the shortlist. We have the honour to say 3 of them are ours. They are Oxford Road, The Tannery, and 22 Handyside Street. Two other firms also have a hat trick of entries; AHHM and vPPR.

Ten other firms can say that they have multiple projects on the shortlist, with two each. A few names here include Hopkins Architects, Moxon, and Bell Phillips. The remaining projects are all then from individual practices or providers.

RIBA’s regional director for London Dian Small had some comments to accompany the release of the shortlist. She said the projects “highlight the diversity of London’s rich architectural heritage”. At the same time, they celebrate important factors like sustainability and providing social value. The hope is the buildings will provide an incentive to take inspirational approaches to urban regeneration.

What happens next?

The next phase of the RIBA London Awards is for a jury to visit each site. They will take a close look at the designs and then decide which will ultimately win awards. The winners will be decided by spring. They will get an award to show they are among the best architects in London.

Winners of the London regional awards will then go on to compete for other prizes later in the year. This will include National Awards in the summer. Anyone who wins one of these can then be in the running for the prestigious Stirling Prize. The shortlist for this, celebrating the best new building of the year, will be out in September.

Our projects

The Oxford Road project was for Brick by Brick. It redeveloped a small site in Croydon that was derelict, so it was excellent for the area. Our job was to transform it to create housing. We are proud of the design, especially how it promotes a positive social dynamic.

The Tannery is an even larger project. It was for London Square. The redevelopment was of a former 19th century industrial site in Southwark. We transformed it to create a mixed use development with new homes as well as studios, a creative hub, and more.

The final project at 22 Handyside Street has become one of the most iconic office buildings in King’s Cross. The project was for Argent, creating a distinct 50,000sq/ft building. The design prioritises the wellbeing of inhabitants and also got the property a BREEAM Outstanding rating.
